Yunnan Province in China has become a local point for the archaeological world with the discovery of more than 400 dinosaur footprints from the early Cretaceous period. These footprints from the early Cretaceous period. These footprints were found in the Konglongshan Mountains, which literally translates to Dinosaur Mountain.
According to a report from China Daily, Wang Tao, head of the research and protection center for dinosaur fossils in Lufeng City, revealed that the rock layers containing these footprints are about 120 million years old. These footprints have been categorized into three main types large footprints resembling those of Sauropods like Diplodocus, footprints similar to those of Theropods like Tyrannosaurus and distinctive front-clawed footprints likely belonging to Stegosaurus or Ankylosaurus.
This discovery suggests that the area was once a lakeshote surrounded by abundant vegetation. Wang speculates that after various types of dinosaurs finished eating, they came to the lake to drink water leaving their footprints in the mud and sand at the lakeshore.
While the Konglongshan Mountain are well-known for numerous dinosaur footprints fossils, Wang emphasized that the scale and diversity of this discovery are unprecedented. This indicates the presence of a diverse dinosaur population in Lufeng during the early Cretaceous period.
Since 1938, more than 120 dinosaur fossils have been unearthed in Lufeng, but this is the first time fossils from the Cretaceous period have been found. These new footprints are expected to aid future effort to uncover dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous period in the area, positioning Lufeng as a leading center for dinosaur research globally.
